Characters designed for a pulp fiction illustration project (yes, there were Cowboy pulps XD). A steampunk/re-imaging of Sergio Leone's classic Once Upon A Time In The West.
Characters:
Claudia's looks, while feminine, hide a tenacious and determined character who is surprisingly tough in the face of the intimidation and threats of the Great West SteamRail Company. Upon arriving on the desert scrubland known as Devil's Spur only to discover that she is a widow, Claudia unexpectedly takes over her husband's land and proceeds the tough, everyday business of etching out a living while standing her ground against the thugs sent to scare her off.
Chapel is a drifter, mysterious in every way; his appearance at Devil's Spur is a godsend to Claudia, yet he speaks rarely. He has been called Chapel due to the silver cross pinned to his poncho like a badge, but nothing about it is known...in fact, his real name is a mystery.
...Yes, I'm having fun. ^^ In general, I didn't want to get too fantasy-esque on the weapons design or costumes, though I'm planning on having some fun with the technology and trains (which wil be massive XD).

No pages; going with the pulp template, the project includes character designs, mood/environment studies, and a cover for the "pulp fiction novel"...which will be inevitably over-the-top. >.>

Heheh, thanks ^^. In my case, I've always loved the "steampunk" aesthetic, even before I knew what it was...probably the fault of too much fantasy literature as a child. Maybe that's why Final Fantasy IX is my favourite of the series...>.>
In my case, I really just wanted to try and go against the whole "anything mixing retrofuturistic technology and the West must be terrible and have Will Smith in it" thing.

Only for the scarf...sadly, there's just no way of doing scarves without them envoking the spirit of Jet.
The poncho is more inspired by The Man With No Name, and the actual physical features are an homage to Charlie Burns (Guy Pierce's character) in The Proposition.
So, in short, I guess Chapel is kind of an amalgamation of my favourite Drifter-type characters. ^^

I love how the shadows belong to the other character, and the softness of the colors is wonderful!
